Verna Adwell Rhodes Endowed Professorship
Friday, May 3, friends, family, former students and faculty from the Sinclair School of Nursing filled the Jesse Rotunda for the announcement and celebration of the establishment of the Verna Adwell Rhodes Endowed Professorship in Nursing. In honor of Rhodes’ achievements, service and generosity, her family and friends have come together to give $1 million to establish the professorship which will help attract and retain influential research faculty in the School of Nursing. Researcher retires after 32-year career
Dr. Vicki Conn has had an illustrious career spanning 32 years since her initial appointment as an assistant professor to the MU School of Nursing. She is a graduate of the MU Sinclair School of Nursing, first with a Masters in Adult Nursing in 1981, followed by a PhD in Social-Psychology of Health and Aging. Conn served as the Distinguished Potter-Brinton Professor since 1995 and as Associate Dean for Research since 2002. Graduate Level Students Visit Campus
Nearly 100 graduate students are on campus this week for orientation into their areas of study. This gives our students the opportunity to meet the faculty members, their classmates, and gives them access to our advising staff. A Selfless Spring Break
For many college students, spring break is a chance to take a much-needed vacation. Others may head home to visit their families and catch up on sleep. Several nursing students chose to use this year’s spring break to serve others throughout the country and across the world. Here are a few of their stories. Robbie Towner, Accelerated BSN
On two separate occasions, accelerated student Robbie Towner has been able to assist victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) because of simulation training he received in the MUSSON Simulation Center. Originally from California, Towner works as an EMT at Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Columbia while completing nursing school. During his mental health class in the Sinclair School of Nursing, Towner and his classmates completed an IPV simulation event, which taught them how to recognize signs of IPV and assist the victim while keeping everyone safe. BSN Students Study in Costa Rica
Over the January intersession, 20 undergraduate nursing students from all three BSN options — traditional, accelerated and the RN-BSN programs — participated a study abroad trip to Monte Verde, Costa Rica. These students were completing their community health clinical hours, required for all BSN students. The group visited a health clinic, a nursing home, a hospital and students provided health education to older members of two rural communities. Along the way, they enjoyed the beautiful scenery and incredible food. Students spent ten days living with a family in the Monte Verde region and were immersed in the culture. While some…
