Dean Lori Popejoy selected fellow of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA)

GSA is the nation's largest interdisciplinary organization dedicated to the field of aging and selects fellows for their outstanding contributions to the field of gerontology.

Lori Popejoy, PhD, RN, FGSA, FAAN is the dean of the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing and named among 60 exemplary professionals as the newest fellows. Read the full press release on GSA’s website.

Fellow status is peer recognition for outstanding contributions to the field of gerontology and represents the highest category of GSA membership. This distinction comes at varying points in a person’s career and is given for diverse activities that include research, teaching, administration, public service, practice and notable participation in the Society. Fellows are chosen from across GSA’s membership groups.

Popejoy is a health systems researcher, building opportunities with community partners using innovative research findings to manage the complex care needs of older adults across the care continuum. Her ongoing research, for more than two decades, focuses on understanding the complex issues surrounding the provision of care to elders in hospitals, nursing homes, community settings, home health care and primary care.

Her work is interdisciplinary including colleagues from the health-related disciplines, informatics, engineering, ethics and economics. She has more than 100 publications in refereed journals and has received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality. She has served as co-director or co-lead on three studies with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovations (CMMI), funded for nearly 48 million dollars.

The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) is the nation’s oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education and practice in the field of aging. The principal mission of the Society — and its 5,500+ members — is to advance the study of aging and disseminate information among scientists, decision makers, and the general public. GSA’s structure includes a nonpartisan public policy institute, the National Academy on an Aging Society and GSA is also home to the National Center to Reframe Aging and the National Coordinating Center for the Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research.

The new fellows will be formally recognized during GSA’s 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting, which will be held from November 13 to 16 in Seattle, Washington.
