SSON Helps Launch New Online Graduate Certificate in Participatory Health Research
The University of Missouri is working to increase the number of researchers who use a patient-centered and community-engaged approach to their work by launching a new online graduate certificate in participatory health research. “When researchers, community members, social welfare experts and health care administrators work as partners to conduct research projects, there is an increase in meaningful change and forward progress,” says Maithe Enriquez, SSON associate professor. “Former U.S. Surgeon General David Stacher has said this type of research methodology holds the key for getting to the root cause of health disparities.” The program will create more health care professionals…

Student Practices ‘Quick’ Medicine in Africa
Professors at the Sinclair School of Nursing do not often recommend taking a week off of classes and clinicals. But when senior Stephanie Oetting learned she had the chance to experience medicine in Africa, everyone knew she had to jump at the opportunity. Oetting spent a week in October 2016 working alongside missionaries in medical clinics in five villages throughout the country of Madagascar. The trip was in partnership with Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Mercy Medical Teams, who sends regular medical mission trips throughout Africa. The team included nine Americans and three Madagascan doctors who partnered alongside a general surgeon.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, intimate partner violence refers to any “physical, sexual or psychological harm by a current or former partner or spouse, which can occur among heterosexual or same-sex couples and does not require sexual…

It is not rare for mothers and daughters to take trips across the country–or even across the world–together. But to travel together to serve as medical missionaries to a third-world country might be a little more rare. That is just what Elizabeth Soto and her mom Tricia Jester did this summer. Instead of your traditional summer vacation, Elizabeth and Tricia packed their bags and headed to Saint-Louis-Du-Nord, Haiti, with Northwest Haiti Christian Mission, to assist with eye exams and surgeries for the impoverished living in the area. For Elizabeth, this trip quickly became “one of the most treasured…
