Dr. Susan D. Scott is a patient safety researcher

Dr. Susan D. Scott is a patient safety researcher whose work centers on workforce well-being, psychological safety, and clinician recovery following emotionally challenging clinical events. Her pioneering research helped define the second victim phenomenon and advance understanding of how healthcare professionals experience and recover from clinical adversity. Her scholarship established foundational recovery frameworks and informed evidence-based peer support models that have expanded internationally across a wide range of healthcare systems. Through this work, she has driven the redesign of institutional support structures—transforming how healthcare organizations respond to professional trauma and strengthening psychologically safe, patient-centered work environments that advance patient safety across diverse healthcare settings and interprofessional workforce populations.
