Sigma Theta Tau
Since the Alpha Iota chapter of the international nursing honor society was formed in 1964, its members have set the standard for creating strategies to improve patient care outcomes and mentor nursing leaders. Examples include:
- Alpha Iota members visited with legislators weekly to seek support for funding a School of Nursing building, which opened in 1979.
- Over the past 40+ years, Alpha Iota has funded more than 50 research projects for more than $30,000. The Chapter has increased its monies to $2,500 twice a year to keep up with the growing expenses in conducting research.
- In 2004, Alpha Iota celebrated its 40th Anniversary and had the national president of Sigma Theta Tau International from 2003 to 2005, Dr. Daniel Pesut, come and share his wisdom with members.
- In April 2008, Alpha Iota, in conjunction with Nursing Outreach, planned and presented a nursing conference “Building Culture of Quality, Safety and Nursing Professionalism: Evidence-Based Practice on the Frontline.” Over 190 staff nurses and managers attended! The chapter has earned the Showcase of Regional Excellence Award for this event from headquarters, which was presented at the 2008 Leadership Academy in September.
Today Alpha Iota chapter has more than 400 active members with more than 3,000 members having been inducted into Sigma Theta Tau - Alpha Iota Chapter. The Chapter invites you to explore our society and consider becoming a member, if you are a nursing leader in your field or in the top third of your student class.
