Information on technology requirements – including hardware and software requirements – has been adapted from Mizzou Online and the MU Division of Information Technology (DoIT).
To complete your online degree through the MU Sinclair School of Nursing, you must have a laptop computer that you can bring with you to on-campus days. Moreover, you must have administrator privileges on your computer, because you must be able to install and configure software.
Your computer should be equipped with the following:

Special considerations for laptops include battery life, weight, and screen size. Consider a port replicator (also called a docking station) to easily connect your laptop to a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power when in the office.
The portability of laptops does increase the risk of damage or theft. See the University of Missouri’s IT Security website for an article on protecting your laptop from theft.
The following devices are not acceptable for completing SSON online course work:
· Google Chromebook
· Tablets such as the iPad. While a tablet can be a valuable accessory to your work environment, it is not a replacement for a laptop. The Microsoft Surface Pro is also not recommended as they are prone to getting hot when run for long periods of time and thus may start to run slow and or shut down randomly.
Webcam and Microphone
To participate in web conferencing sessions (which are a required component of many courses), you will need a webcam and a headset with a microphone. If these are not built into your machine, you must purchase them separately.
Using earbuds with an inline microphone (e.g., the Apple EarPods that come with an iPhone) are acceptable. Although a headset with microphone that connects to your computer are a preferred unit as they avoid less feedback.
Tiger Tech at Mizzou
As a Mizzou student, you have the option of purchasing your computer through the Tiger Tech store. Online ordering is available.
You must have reliable access to a broadband Internet connection, with cable modem or DSL, with a minimum connection speed of 1.0 Mbps; 1.5 Mbps is recommended. Please note that satellite or cellular connections can be unreliable, as can public wi-fi networks.
If you plan to complete any course activities from your workplace, make sure you are not behind a firewall that will block your access to Canvas or other tools.
Course guidelines and materials are presented over the Internet and require iframes and Java-capable browser. We recommend the following browsers:
Other browsers and operating systems may work correctly with Canvas; however, we cannot guarantee that all features will work correctly with other browsers or versions of these browsers. If you experience problems with your course, you might need to experiment with different browsers.
Quality virus-protection software is recommended. This software is especially critical if you are accessing coursework from a computer on a network that is not protected by regularly updated virus-protection software. MU’s Division of IT (DoIT) recommends the following:
You will be required to create and upload Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations over the course of your studies. If you do not already have Microsoft Office installed on your computer, you can download Student Office 365 for free from DoIT:
- Go to the University of Missouri Help Central page.
- Type “Student Office 365” in the search field.
- Choose the “Student Office 365 Setup Guide” article.
- Choose the appropriate “How to install” article (i.e. for Windows or Mac) and follow the instructions.
You are welcome to use your MacBook to complete your required course work. However, please be aware that if you use the default Macintosh office suite programs, you must export your files to Microsoft formats before submitting. SSON faculty will not accept documents submitted in the Pages, Numbers, or Keynote formats.
Many of your required readings will be made available to you in portable document format (PDF). The latest versions of the Firefox and Chrome browsers have built-in PDF readers. We still recommend that you download Adobe Acrobat Reader, especially for completing some of the PDF forms that are required as you progress through the program.
Zotero Reference Manager
You will use Zotero to organize your scholarly references. It is available free.
Zotero: This is a free software program that allows you to create your own library or database of citations. You can also use it to store PDFs. Its rocking app is that it works with MS Word to create your intext citations and your bibliography. You can download zotero from https://www.zotero.org/. Note that you will need to download both the Windows add-in and the browser connector. (If you already use EndNote, keep using it.)

IBM SPSS is a software product line for the analytical process: planning, data collection, data access and management, analysis, reporting, and deployment. It is required for students taking NURSE 7010 (required cofor PhD students; recommended for DNP students) and NURSE 8020 (required courses for PhD students). You can purchase SPSS though the Division of IT (DoIT); The cost is $85 as of July 2021. Please allow at least 3 business days for your request to be processed.
