Areas of Study and Curriculum

There are two Masters of Science (Nursing) areas of study available for students: 

Leadership in Nursing and Healthcare Systems
Nurse Educator

 

MS(N) Curriculum

The curriculum is based on recommendations by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in The Essentials of Master’s Education for Advanced Practice Nursing (2011), For students in the MS Leader Program, the curriculum also includes specific recommendations developed by the ANA in Nursing Administration: Scope and Standards of Practice (2016) and the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Competency Model (2015) for students in the MS Leader Program. Specific recommendations developed by the National League for Nursing in The Scope of Practice for Academic Nurse Educators (2012) are integrated into the curriculum for those being prepared as nurse educators.

 


 

Leadership in Nursing and Healthcare Systems

The Leadership in Nursing and Healthcare Systems MS(N) program curriculum prepares nurses to:

  • Manage clinical efforts across health care settings
  • Provide visionary leadership
  • Lead quality and safety initiatives 
  • Implement evidence-based practice 

The MS(N) Leadership curriculum provides core master’s coursework in combination with leadership specialty courses. 
Leadership specialty courses focus on principles of leadership within healthcare organizations, management of human resources, health care financial management, and managing quality, safety and performance outcomes.

Certification as a Nurse Leader

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) offers certification as an Advanced Nurse Executive to recognize excellence in nurse leaders and administrators. Students who have completed a master’s degree in the nurse leader area of study and have two years or more of full-time employment within the past five years in an administrative position at the nurse executive level OR a faculty position teaching graduate students executive level nursing administration are eligible to sit for the exam.

 


 

Nurse Educator

The Nurse Educator MS(N) Program curriculum prepares nurses to:

  • Implement emerging teaching strategies
  • Create innovative curriculum
  • Integrate evidence-based practice
  • Gain basic advanced practice nursing skills

The MS(N) Educator curriculum provides core master’s coursework in combination with leadership specialty courses.
Educator specialty courses focus on advanced knowledge in teaching strategies and curriculum development as well as advanced knowledge in pathophysiology, pharmacology, and advanced health assessment.

Certification as a Nurse Educator

The National League for Nursing administers the Certified Nurse Educator exam to recognize excellence in the academic nurse educator. Students who have completed a master’s of science in nursing in the nurse educator area of study and are currently licensed as a registered nurse are eligible to sit for this exam.
