COLUMBIA , Mo. As a nursing student, Kara Bonnell is personally driven to create a personal interaction with each and every one of her patients. She tries to take care of them as if they were her own family because, she believes, they are someone's family.

Personally she strives to know each patient as the individual they were before being admitted into the hospital. When conducting necessary procedures, she talks to them on a personal level while trying to make their stay as comfortable as possible.

“Kara is an excellent student,” said Brenda Hanson, instructor of nursing at the MU Sinclair School of Nursing. “She is safe, dependable and thorough when caring for patients. But more importantly she conveyed trust and competency to the patients so they felt comfortable and safe in her care.”

Bonnell firmly believes that nurses are the patient's advocate. In the health care team, she sees the nurse playing a vital role in the level of care that each patient receives. She sets high standards for herself thus providing the best care possible to her patients.

Her compassion and work ethic toward patients were the deciding factors in her receiving the 6 th -Semester Student Award for Overall Excellence at the School's annual banquet on April 11. Bonnell, a 2005 graduate of Ste. Genevieve High School, is the daughter of Robert and Ann Bonnell.
