President's Message -- February 6, 2008

Greeting Alpha Iota members!

It's a new year and lots of Alpha Iota activities are in the works! Our next General Meeting is on March 20 th from 5 to 7pm We will have a meal and board meeting, including the annual awards presentations, for the first hour. The second hour we will have a special presentation by Dr. Heather Carver. She will present a portion of her theatrical stories about being a breast cancer survivor. We feel honored that she will be presenting her inspiring thoughts with a dose of humor. Please come and bring a fellow colleague, if you desire.

The Evidence-Based Practice Conference has now been finalized and the brochures/ applications are available from NODE. Because we are a major sponsor, Alpha Iota members will receive a special discount if you decide to come. It should be a good day to get the “scoop” on using EBP in the clinical area. Lot 's of opportunities to see what nurses in the Mid-Missouri area are doing with EBP and to network. Hope to see many of you there. This conference falls the day before the School of Nursing 's Annual Banquet, where Dr. Rose Porter will preside over her last banquet before she retires. Combine both events to make your trip to Columbia worthwhile! The first 2 weeks of April will also be when interviews for a new dean are planned, so come on campus for the conference and banquet to hear the progress in our dean search as well!

Induction for the spring is planned for April 25th, from 2-3pm in S261 at the School of Nursing . Plan to attend the event to welcome new members and make them feel a part of the nursing leadership community. This induction will include not only undergraduates and masters students, but also the accelerated-option and RN-to-BSN students who qualify as well. We need nominations from YOU for any nurses in your work-area who qualify as a nurse leader, to join our society. The deadline for nominations (application form)is Feb. 28th.

The board approved an increase in funding amounts for our annual research awards this year. See the advertisement inside for further details. This increase is meant to keep up with the ever-rising costs to conduct beginning research, and will hopefully entice more applicants, so pass the word on! Also, if you plan to participate in a worthy fund-raising cause such as the March of Dimes or Alzheimer Walk this year, keep us in mind to support you. We offer $25 per member per year for up to 10 applicants. All you need is to contact our treasurer, Greg Alexander, and wear one of our purple wrist bands during the event to show our support!

Finally, we need you to vote for the ballot of officers that are listed in this newsletter. Please give us your support of our nominees or write in your own nominee, if you know a member who wants to participate. Our Nomination Committee has been hard at work getting commitments for this ballot. Thanks for participating! See you all in March.
