Two MU nurses receive clinical faculty preceptor awards from the MU Sinclair School of Nursing

COLUMBIA , Mo.  – Joe Johnson and Lezlie Dahlke, University of Missouri Hospital and Clinic RNs, were nominated by nursing students and faculty members to receive the inaugural Clinical Faculty Preceptor awards at the MU Sinclair School of Nursing's annual banquet.

These two new award categories — the 2008 Clinical and Community Health Faculty Preceptor Awards for Excellence — are designed to honor faculty members from outside the School who has, through teaching excellence, demonstrated a commitment to the profession of nursing by building successful collaborative relationships with nursing faculty and students; providing a high quality preceptored learning experience; supplying an environment conducive to learning; and challenging students to use critical thinking skills and demonstrating a positive role model.

A preceptor is an individual who is an extension of our educational staff. They directly impact the learning experiences of our students on a one-on-one basis. As the School's Clinical Faculty Preceptor recipient, Joe Johnson is one of those exceptional individuals who has touched the lives of our students in a positive way as well as all those around him.

The combination of his clinical skills, education and personality allows him to be a resource and mentor to not only students, but everyone at University Hospital . As a Staff Nurse 4 at University Hospitals and Clinics, Johnson is truly an expert in the field of nursing.

He gets students involved in specific procedures to bring lecture topics together with hands-on practice. The students also see how Johnson balances work and play in such a fashion that it makes them enjoy coming back.

“Students have said that after their practicum with Joe that they are not only better nurses, but better people,” said Rose Porter, Dean of the School.

As the coordinator of Trauma Outreach Education for University Hospitals and Clinics, Lezlie Dahlke is committed to nursing, loves to teach and has demonstrated her ability to build successful collaborative relationships with our faculty and students.

Her energy and passion to secure a safe environment for children in Columbia makes her an excellent role model for the students in the community health course and the recipient of the School's Community Health Faculty Preceptor recipient.

Dahlke demonstrates professional excellence and leadership skills and expects the same from the students who select Safe Kids Columbia and Trauma Outreach Education for their field experience. She is a staunch supporter of the professional nurses' role in the community. Her very nature seeks to nurture and develop relationships and attitudes that are both uplifting and encouraging for the students.

She is never too busy to send students words of encouragement or to applaud jobs well done to boost their growth and development. By her daily example, the students see that nurses make a difference outside the traditional hospital setting.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni of the school were honored at the 18th Annual MU Sinclair School of Nursing Banquet held at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Mo., on April 11. The event was held to recognize those individuals who have elevated the reputation, research, teaching and service at the MU Sinclair School of Nursing.

“The school's annual banquet gives us a chance to honor those who have gone the extra mile and in the process elevated the bar of excellence in the field of nursing,” Porter said. “These two nurses truly make a difference in nursing student's careers and lives.”
