Essig Clinical Simulation Learning Center

Students working in the Skills Lab

Innovative teaching modalities bring excitement into the classroom.

Showing Signs of Face Lift

Recent appointments to the former Skills Lab, along with a steady stream of new technology that seems to arrive each day, are proving to be just the "face-lift" this vital space in the School of Nursing needed.

Thanks to the gift made by Dr. LeRoy Essig to honor his late mother and father for the education they provided for him, which led him to meeting his wife and his fulfilling career in oncology, this section of the School of Nursing is evolving into being all it can be.

The official naming and acknowledgement of Dr. Essig and all of the Building Partners who helped to make this a reality, will come later in 2011, but the changes are already being recognized and winning acclaim by students who are benefitting from these advancements.

Ultimately the Center will be known as the:

Essig Clinical Simulation Learning Center
In honor of
LeRoy William and Anna Klashus Essig

Initially the goal was to remodel the existing facility extensively, but plans changed to reappoint it instead and concentrate more on the technology that could move with the school rather than in the physical surroundings. When the students are engaged in the moment of working with interactive, high-tech mannequins - they barely notice the surroundings. This plan also allowed us to purchase technology that was needed now, in order to best serve as many students as we can by providing these learning opportunities that build competencies and confidence.

Dr. Essig and his lead gift, along with the Building Partners gifts, have also enabled the School to go after campus improvement funding to additionally provide new seating, paint, lighting and to enhance the goal of having this area closely mimic true clinical settings.

You can still be a part of this project and underscore your support of nursing education. A complete list of the remaining Essig Clinical Simulation Learning Center Needs is available at this link. It will also direct you in how to make a donation, a pledge, or even a gift on line.

Corporate Donors

As part of the renovation, Technology that Fosters Learning will be a critical component. By working with forward‐thinking companies, we hope to use our lab as both a test site as well as a potential demonstration model for medical‐related corporations to showcase their cutting‐edge technology to the betterment of our students.
