Information on technology requirements – including hardware and software requirements – has been adapted from Mizzou Online and the MU Division of Information Technology (DoIT).

Hardware Requirements

To complete your online degree through the MU Sinclair School of Nursing, you must have a laptop computer that you can bring with you to on-campus days. Moreover, you must have administrator privileges on your computer, because you must be able to install and configure software.

Your computer should be equipped with the following:

  Minimum Recommended
Operating System (PC) Microsoft Windows 7 (with Service Pack 1 or greater) Microsoft Windows 10
Operating System (Mac) Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) Mac OS X 10.11 (Capitan)
Processor Core: i5 Processor Core: i7 Processor
Hard Drive 250 GB standard hard drive 250 GB solid state hard drive or greater
Memory 8 GB random access memory (RAM) 16 GB RAM or greater
Networking NIC (10/100BASE-T Ethernet) and Wireless NIC (802.11 g/n) NIC (GB ethernet card) and Wireless NIC (802.11 g/n)
Devices 8 GB USB drive 16 GB USB drive or greater

Special considerations for laptops include battery life, weight, and screen size. Consider a port replicator (also called a docking station) to easily connect your laptop to a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power when in the office.

The portability of laptops does increase the risk of damage or theft. See the University of Missouri’s IT Security website for an article on protecting your laptop from theft.

Note: Tablets such as the iPad are designed to be used as accessories for your work environment, not as a laptop replacement. The exception to this is the Microsoft Surface Pro. It is a tablet that can be configured with as much hard drive and memory as a laptop and can run full Windows applications. If ordered with at least 8 GB of memory and at least 256 GB of disk space, it can be used as a laptop replacement.

Webcam and Microphone

To participate in web conferencing sessions (which are a required component of many courses), you will need a webcam and a headset with a microphone. If these are not built into your machine, you must purchase them separately.

Using earbuds with an inline microphone (e.g., the Apple EarPods that come with an iPhone) is not recommended. Instead, purchase a headset that connects to your computer via a USB port. See Blackboard Collaborate Session Headset Examples (Instructional Technology and Design Office, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois) for recommendations.

Tiger Tech at Mizzou

As a Mizzou student, you have the option of purchasing your computer through the Tiger Tech store. Online ordering is available.

Internet Connection

You must have reliable access to a broadband Internet connection, with cable modem or DSL, with a minimum connection speed of 1.0 Mbps; 1.5 Mbps is recommended. Please note that satellite or cellular connections can be unreliable, as can public wi-fi networks.

If you plan to complete any course activities from your workplace, make sure you are not behind a firewall that will block your access to your learning management system (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas) or other tools.

Software Requirements

Course guidelines and materials are presented over the Internet and require iframes and Java-capable browser. We recommend the following browsers:

Other browsers and operating systems may work correctly with Blackboard; however, we cannot guarantee that all features will work correctly with other browsers or versions of these browsers. If you experience problems with your course, you might need to experiment with different browsers.

If your operating system is Windows 10, you must use Firefox or Chrome; Blackboard and Canvas are not compatible with Microsoft Edge.

Virus Protection

Quality virus-protection software is recommended. This software is especially critical if you are accessing coursework from a computer on a network that is not protected by regularly updated virus-protection software. MU’s Division of IT (DoIT) recommends the following:

Microsoft Office

You will be required to create and upload Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations over the course of your studies. If you do not already have Microsoft Office installed on your computer, you can download Student Office 365 for free from DoIT:

  1. Go to the University of Missouri Help Central page
  2. Type “Student Office 365” in the search field
  3. Choose the “Student Office 365 Setup Guide” article
  4. Choose the appropriate “How to install” article (i.e. for Windows or Mac) and follow the instructions

PDF Reader

Many of your required readings will be made available to you in portable document format (PDF). The latest versions of the Firefox and Chrome browsers have built-in PDF readers. We still recommend that you download Adobe Acrobat Reader, especially for completing some of the PDF forms that are required as you progress through the program.

EndNote Reference Manager

You will use EndNote to organize your scholarly references. It is available free to Mizzou students through DoIT. You must have your copy downloaded and installed prior to your summer orientation campus visit:

  1. Log in to the DoIT MyServices page with your PawPrint and password
  2. Under Categories (on the left-hand side of the page), select Software
  3. Select EndNote for Personal Purchase
  4. Click the Request Service button and follow the instructions

SPSS Statistics Desktop 23

IBM SPSS is a software product line for the analytical process: planning, data collection, data access and management, analysis, reporting, and deployment. It is required for students taking NURSE 7010 and NURSE 8020 (which are required courses for PhD students and recommended for DNP students). You can purchase SPSS though the Division of IT (DoIT); the cost is $70. Please allow at least 3 business days for your request to be processed.

Please follow these instructions to purchase your copy of SPSS:

  1. Log in to the DoIT MyServices page with your PawPrint and password
  2. Under Categories (on the left-hand side of the page), select Software
  3. Select IBM SPSS for Personal Purchase
  4. Click the Request Service button and follow the instructions (For “Software Information,” enter “IBM SPSS.”)
