Public Health with a focus on social support during pregnancy

Program of research

Domestic violence is a major heath problem for women and children as well as a significant social issue. My research has focused on domestic violence in a population of pregnant women and has included collaborating with nurses nationally and internationally and with members of other disciplines on the MU campus. Specifically I have investigated the prevalence of intimate partner violence, its consequences to mother and fetus, and intervention strategies to improve health outcomes in both the woman and child. This research not only addresses a gap in knowledge but also is providing evidence-based practice recommendations for clinical practice. It has also been useful in advising legislators and policy makers in their development of programs to aid this vulnerable population.

A secondary focus of my research has been on researching smoking cessation programs targeting women of reproductive age. I have implemented a randomized controlled trial testing a nurse-delivered telephone social support intervention for low-income rural pregnant women in Missouri who smoke. I have also collaborated with members of the Department of Family and Community Medicine targeting not only the woman who smokes but also her partner if he smokes. Additionally, my colleagues from the Department of Family and Community Medicine and I have been involved in several other tobacco cessation initiatives.

Bio/professional experience

My teaching activities are consistent with my strong clinical based background in maternal child health and international public health. My international experience in public health nursing and extensive research experience in domestic violence and smoking cessation has helped me to contribute to the overall mission of the Sinclair School of Nursing. I bring almost 30 years of such experience thus providing a strong theoretical and practical perspective to my faculty position.

Student mentoring projects

Since 2003, my funded research projects have provided fertile ground for training undergraduate and graduate nursing, human development and family studies, and social work students in research methods. Many undergraduate students have registered for an independent study course and have been exposed to various aspects of nursing research. Additionally, other undergraduate students (generic, RN-BSN, and accelerated nursing students) have participated in my research studies as part of their clinical experience in Nursing in Communities. Their experiences included participating in day-to-day activities of a large randomized controlled trial, collecting data in the homes of participants, and interacting with community agencies that provide resources for low-income pregnant women. Numerous master’s students and two doctoral students have completed their advanced nursing research practicum working with my research group. Currently I have an interdisciplinary team of doctoral level research assistants (Human Development and Family Studies, Social Work, and nursing) that are employed as a research assistant on one or more of my research studies.
