Applying to the traditional BSN program

The traditional four-year bachelor's degree in nursing option is designed for students coming directly from high school or transferring from another university. Freshman and sophomore students are identified as nursing majors and typically are admitted to the clinical major in their junior and senior years. Approximately 60 semester hours of general education and prerequisite coursework are required before the student may be admitted to the clinical nursing major.

Requirements

Freshman and sophomore students who apply to be nursing majors must meet the following admission requirements.

Any incoming student who scores at least 29 on the ACT and graduates in the top 10 percent of his or her high school class is guaranteed admission into the clinical nursing major through the Nursing Scholars Program after applying to the Honors College.

Prospective students applying to nursing must first be admitted to Mizzou as freshmen in the nursing program. Students should select pre-nursing on their University of Missouri application forms. Learn more about applying to Mizzou.

Second, check out funding opportunities and determine whether you’re eligible for the Nursing Scholars Program.

Admission to the clinical major

Students apply for admission to the clinical major during the last semester of general education and prerequisite coursework (clinical applications will be available in the Student Affair's Office, S235). Applicants for the clinical major are considered on a competitive and space-available basis for each admission period. Clinical admission criteria include:

  1. Successful completion of all general education and prerequisite coursework. A student must have grades from biology, chemistry, and two of the three advanced lab sciences (microbiology, anatomy, physiology) to be eligible to apply for the clinical nursing major;
  2. Minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) for all college/university courses;
  3. Competitive grade-point average in nursing prerequisite courses; and
  4. Evidence of capacity to uphold the practice standards, functional abilities, and ethical codes of the nursing profession.

A profile is submitted for each student based on the above criteria. The faculty considers for special admission those students who have demonstrated unusual motivation toward a nursing career and whose backgrounds demonstrate substantial economic or cultural disadvantages. Students not meeting the above criteria may submit a special request for consideration (see handbook for more information).

Current Mizzou students applying to the clinical major should:

  • Review the requirements.
  • Fill out the application and submit before the deadline.
  • Apply for clinical major nursing scholarships.

Once a student has been admitted to the clinical major, proof of required immunizations, CPR certification and a negative drug screening must be filed with Student Health before the start of clinicals the first summer semester.

Because the School of Nursing is committed to rural health-care needs, special consideration may be given to students from rural areas.

Note: To properly prepare for admission to the clinical major, nursing majors are encouraged to review the admission requirements for the clinical major well in advance.

The Sinclair School of Nursing considers applicants for the clinical major on a competitive and space-available basis for each admission period. Students applying for the clinical major must successfully complete their general education and prerequisite course work or submit an outlined plan for when the remaining courses will be completed before beginning the clinical major.
