If a student qualifies, the financial aid package usually combines grants or scholarships, a low-interest loan and an opportunity for on-campus employment. A student majoring in Nursing may qualify for the Nursing Loan, a federal award to qualified undergraduate nursing students. The loan awards up to $2,000 annually. Information about applying for financial assistance to MU should be requested from the MU Financial Aid Office, 11 Jesse Hall, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO 65211. MU offers more than 100 general scholarships to students of exceptional talent. In addition, the School of Nursing offers several scholarships to clinical nursing majors. To be considered for scholarships, entering freshmen should file a scholarship application for freshmen students by December 1. Nursing transfer and continuing students should file a scholarship application for continuing and transfer students by February 1. Ann Crowe Essig Undergraduate

Research Mentorship Program

Information and Application

The Ann Crowe Essig Undergraduate Nursing Research Mentorship Program (UNRMP) is intended to encourage and support undergraduate nursing student participation in School of Nursing faculty research. The program will acquaint students with the research process and should serve as a stimulus for further investigation and education. Participation in the research process allows the student to experience firsthand numerous aspects of nursing research.

Students actively participate with faculty mentors on research projects. Projects may be developed:

  • by a faculty member who invites a student to participate,
  • by a faculty member posting a description of a project, or
  • by a student making a suggestion to a faculty member.

*Every effort is made to connect students and faculty with similar research interests.

This program will be conducted during the eight week summer session. Students selected for the UNRMP are expected to devote 20 hours/week for an eight week summer session.

Faculty members should commit to regular and frequent meetings to provide adequate supervision. Student expectations should be established early and be written with a copy to both the faculty and the student.

The project culminates with an oral or poster presentation and a written description of the project (approximately 1500 words). Students will have the opportunity to do presentations on their research during the Health Sciences Research Day at the MU Undergraduate Research Conference, as well as the Undergraduate Research Day at the State Capital.

Each participating student will receive a cash stipend from the endowment in Mrs. Essig's name. The student will be enrolled at the University but for no credit. This will allow students access to library services, computers and recreational facilities.

Eligibility:

Students who have completed their 5th, 6th, or 7th semesters, as well as RN students who have completed N4950 Nursing Theory and Research, are invited to apply.

Preference will be given to students mentored in the areas of oncology, lymphedema and women's health issues. Students must have a cumulative 3.25 GPA.

Application Process:

  • Complete the attached Application Form and Description of Proposed Project
    (see Application Form).
  • Request recommendation from one clinical faculty from the most recent semester completed. Faculty to return the reference form directly to Dr. McDaniel.
  • A committee consisting of the Director of Undergraduate Study and two faculty members will select participants.
