BSN Program
Students in the first two years at Mizzou (freshman and sophomores) are designated as pre-nursing. Third and fourth year students (juniors and seniors) are designated as clinical nursing majors.Students who meet the admission criteria for the University and choose nursing as their major are admitted as pre-nursing. An academic advisor helps majors plan a course of study to meet the general foundation and prerequisite requirements for application to the clinical major.

Clinical Nursing Major
Students apply for admission to the clinical nursing major during the last semester of general education and prerequisite course work. Applicants for the clinical nursing major are considered on a competitive and space available basis for each admission period. Admission criteria for the clinical major include:
  • Successful completion of general education and prerequisite course work or a planned outline of when remaining courses will be completed before beginning the clinical major.
  • A passing grade in General Biology and Chemistry, and must have completed at least two to the three additional science courses with lab prior to applying for admission. All science courses must be completed with a grade of C or above before entering the clinical nursing major.
  • A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) for the 60 hours of general and foundation courses is required.
  • Evidence of capacity to uphold the practice standards and ethical codes of the nursing profession.

 


RN/BSN Option

  • Application and admission to MU.
  • Application and admission to the School of Nursing.
  • Official transcripts on file from all colleges and universities attended on file.
  • Transcript review on file with an academic plan of study completed.
  • Minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) for the 63 hours of general and foundation courses required.
  • Minimum grade-point average of 2.0 for any courses taken at MU.
  • Current licensure as an RN in the United States and eligible for licensure in Missouri.
  • An interview may be requested.

Students not meeting the above criteria may submit a petition for special consideration. Special consideration may be given to students who have demonstrated unusual motivation toward a nursing career and whose backgrounds demonstrate substantial economic or cultural diversities. Because of the School of Nursing's commitment to rural health care needs, special consideration also may be given to students from rural areas.

Accelerated BSN

Individuals who hold a baccalaureate or higher degree in another field and want to pursue a BSN degree must apply and be admitted to the University of Missouri-Columbia and to the MU Sinclair School of Nursing. Admissions are made based on a competitive basis and a careful evaluation of all admission materials. Applicants will not be considered for admission if all official transcripts are not on file with the School of Nursing and the Admissions Office.

MS(N) Program

Students applying for admission to the MU Sinclair School of Nursing Graduate Program need to meet the following admission requirements:

  • A degree from a nationally accredited baccalaureate nursing program;
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 (an A = 4.0) for the last 60 credit hours of the baccalaureate program;
  • Two recommendation forms from qualified people able to predict the applicant's ability to succeed in graduate study;
  • Current licensure as an RN;
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are waived for students with a 3.3 or better grade point (4.0 grading scale) based on the last 60 hours of their bachelor of science degrees;
  • Successful completion of graduate-level statistics course;
  • A personal interview may be requested.

 


PhD Program

Doctoral students are admitted at various times during the academic year. Applicants are evaluated for admission based on these criteria:

  • Graduation from an accredited baccalaureate program with a 3.2 minimum GPA (4.0 scale).
  • Graduation from an accredited master’s program with a 3.5 minimum GPA.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) within the preceding five years. Original copies are required.
  • Foreign applicants should meet minimum requirements on tests of written and spoken English (TOEFL).
  • The admission of international students must be appointed by the Coordinator of International Student Programs.
  • Three letters of reference.
  • Original essay on professional goals and research interests.
