Nursing Fellowship 2007-2008

WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Nurses with a baccalaureate degree in nursing who want to work with populations where there is an interface between public health, community health and nursing. Nurses who want to help improve health care for all populations at risk including the underserved and people of color and their families. Those who are interested in being a part of a diverse student group in a forward-looking program within a top-ranked school with experienced public-health nursing faculty in the beautiful, friendly Midwest.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

  • Administrator or director of a public-health agency
  • Program director or coordinator of state public-health and medical-care programs
  • Community outreach director or coordinator for hospitals, health centers, health associates or managed-care plans
  • Director or coordinator of school-health programs
  • Nurse researcher for health-care institutions
  • Director of parish nursing programs
  • Community nurse liaison for outpatient facility services
  • Consultant for hospitals, home-health agencies, daycare centers and other care agencies
  • Director and coordinator roles in not-for-profit agencies such as American Heart Association, March of Dimes, United Way, etc.

THE PROGRAM
The curriculum includes courses and clinical practica that are designed to be flexible and accessible where you will learn:

  • To provide population-based care for at-risk, ethnically diverse, and underserved populations
  • Current trends and issues in public health, health care, and public health nursing
  • Administration, leadership and managerial skills
  • Effective methods of assessment, planning, designing, implementating, and evaluating of public-health programs
  • Skills in collaborating with other health-care providers and health-care agencies
  • Data-based client and program outcome evaluation

Practicum sites include schools and local public-health agencies, community health agencies, health organizations, and institutions offering community outreach. Practicum experiences may be completed at a local site. All courses are available via the Internet and clinical requirements can be met in the student’s geographical area. Students may focus on a specific area of public health or choose a school health specialty focus.

What are the prerequisites?
• Bachelors in Nursing
• Completion of Graduate Record Exam (required if Grade Point Average based on last 60 hours of bachelor's degree is less than 3.3)
• Graduate level statistics

What certification would I be eligible for?
Upon graduation, students have the educational preparation necessary for American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Community Health Nursing.

How would I be licensed?

Graduates who complete this educational program and pass one of the ANCC certification tests for community health nursing are eligible to be certified in Missouri as advance practice nurses, with the addition of one course in advanced pharmacology. For more information on another state, contact your state’s board of nursing.

In addition, the School of Nursing has opportunities for students to be teaching assistants, research assistants and apply for professional nurse traineeship funding.
