Nursing Educator

Applications for the Master of Science in Nursing Program are due February 1st for summer
and fall admissions. Applications for the winter semester are due October 1st.

 

WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Individuals with baccalaureate degrees in nursing who want to:

  • Teach undergraduate students in schools of nursing
  • Prepare for positions as either a staff development coordinator in a hospital or clinical setting
  • Become a faculty member in a research-extensive university with faculty who are involved in teaching, research and innovative health-care programs

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

  • Nurse Educator in PN, ASN, or BSN programs
  • Inservice Educators Staff Developement Coordinator
  • Staff Educator in a practice setting, such as a hospital, rehabilitation center or public-health or home-health agency
  • Nurse researcher

THE PROGRAM

The curriculum includes theoretical courses and clinical practica to provide essential knowledge and skills to function in the role of a nursing educator. The nursing educator preparation also may lead to a student’s decision to obtain a doctoral degree with the goal of pursuing an academic career in higher education.

How long does it take to complete the program?
It takes approximately two years to complete the program while attending full time.

What are the prerequisites?
• Bachelors in Nursing
• Completion of Graduate Record Exam (required if Grade Point Average based on last 60 hours of bachelor's degree is less than 3.3)
• Graduate level statistics

How would I be licensed?
In Missouri, you would be licensed as a registered professional nurse by the State Board of Nursing. If combined with the CNS or NP role, and passing the corresponding certification examination, you would be eligible to be recognized as an advanced practice nurse by the board. For information about another state, contact that state’s board of nursing.

What certification would I be eligible for?
At present there is no Nurse Educator certifying exam. However, combined with the Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner role, graduates of the program would be eligible for the corresponding national certifying examination.

What financial assistance is available?
Financial assistance programs are available. Contact the Student Affairs Office, at (573) 882-0277 or (800) 437-4339 for further information. Positions as teaching assistants are also available and may provide tuition assistance.
