Nursing Specialty: Adult Health

Interest Area: Wound healing and human microcirculation. Prevention and treatment of pressure and venous leg ulcers, measurement of wound perfusion, skin 02, and C02, nutrition and wound healing, symptom management in patients with chronic wounds, nursing care of cardiovascular patients

Wipke-Tevis received her BS in Nursing in 1985 from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She obtained her MS(N) in Cardiovascular Nursing from the University of California-San Francisco in 1991 and her PhD in Physiological Nursing in 1996. She joined the MU Sinclair School of Nursing in 1996. Since 1996 she has taught Adult Health courses in the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs and supervises master's and doctoral student research. She is a member of the Student Admission and Progression committee and is the chair of the Graduate Student Scholarship sub-committee. Since 2001 she has served as the Coordinator of the Clinical Nurse Specialist area of study. In addition, she has represented the MU Sinclair School of Nursing as a member of the Health Sciences Center Institutional Review Board since 1999.

An Active member in the Society for Vascular Nursing since 1987, Wipke-Tevis has served the Society in the following capacities: Item Writer for 1st National Certification Exam (1996), Editorial Board Member (1990-present), Board of Directors (1998-2000), Board Liaison to the Research Committee (1998-2000), Passing Point Examiner for National Certification Exam (1999), and is currently the chairman of the Research Committee (2000-2004). A widely-published author, Deidre has numerous articles and book chapters related to vascular nursing, wound healing, and vascular nursing research in journals such as Advances in Skin and Wound Care, Applied Nursing Research Research, Heart and Lung, Home Healthcare Nurse, Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Journal of Vascular Nursing, Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing, Nursing Research, Ostomy and Wound Management, Progress in Cardiovascular Nursing, Rehabilitation Nursing, Research in Nursing and Health and Wounds. She has presented human microcirculation, vascular nursing and wound healing research locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Due to her expertise in wound healing research, she has served as NIH grant reviewer and a Tri-Service Nursing Research Program grant reviewer.

She has been funded successfully for her research from organizations such as local sigma Theta Tau chapters, Convatec Nursing Research, the Leda Sears Trust, Iowa Gerontological Nursing Interventions Research Center, Society for Vascular Nursing, and the Heartland Affiliate of the American Heart Association. She is currently the principal investigator on a grant funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research to examine the effects of position and compression on skin microcirculation in healthy adults and venous ulcer patients.

Her research takes place in the Wound Healing and Human Microcirculation Laboratory which was established within the MU Sinclair School of Nursing in 1999. The laboratory is a quiet, climate controlled room that evaluates human skin microcirculation using laser Doppler flowmetry, transcutaneous oxygen and carbon dioxide monitors, and thermocouple skin probes. Undergraduate, masters, and doctoral nursing students are routinely involved in the research occurring within this laboratory. During the last two years alone (2004-2006), Wipke-Tevis has had 4 NIH-funded undergraduate EXPRESS scholars, 1 NIH-funded post-baccalaureate PREP scholar, 4 masters' student graduate research assistants and 2 undergraduate student technicians working in the laboratory as well as 6 students doing independent study work in the laboratory.
