Research Description: Old homebound women's experience of reaching help quickly.

Nursing Specialty: Family and Community Health Nursing and Gerontological Nursing.

Interest Area: Descriptive phenomenological study of health-related experiences of older adults who live alone, gerontological nursing theory, issues pertinent to public health and public health policy.

Eileen Porter is a professor at the MU Sinclair School of Nursing. Her R29 grant, which was funded by NIH/NINR on the initial submission, narrowed the focus of her descriptive phenomenological dissertation research on older widows' experience of living alone to their experience of home care. The project has yielded multiple data-based and methodological publications. Future work will focus on undergirding older widow's efforts to interacting with the helpers they need to live at home alone.

In addition to work focused on description of older women's health-related experiences, other areas of scholarship are: (a) research traditions that are not grounded in the persons' health-related experience, (b) the researchers experience with older women, and (c) teaching nursing research.

Dr. Porter's current project is an RO1 Grant funded by NIH/NIA to describe old homebound women's experience of reaching help quickly.
