Nursing Specialty: Gerontologica Nursing

Interest Area: Gerontological Nursing, Decision-Making, Hospital Discharge Planning, End-of-Life Care and Decision-Making.

Research Description: Health care decision-making by frail older adults, family members, and health care teams; congruence in decision-making; hospital discharge planning; and end-of-life care and decisions.

Dr. Popejoy studies and researches health care decision-making by frail older adults, family members, and health care teams. She is particularly interested in decisional congruence about discharge destination decisions, which was the focus of her dissertation study. She is also interested in end-of-life care and decision-making. She is currently completing a two-year study about palliative care in intensive care units. Prior to completing her doctorate Dr. Popejoy worked with several other studies aimed at improving care to older adults. These studies were: The Aging in Place Project (Karen Marek, PI), Quality Improvement Program of Missouri (Marilyn Rantz, PI), and Lower Respiratory Infections in Nursing Home Residents (David Mehr, PI).

n 2002 Dr. Popejoy was awarded a Predoctoral Scholarship by the John A. Hartford Foundation, Building Academic Nursing Capacity in the amount of $100,000. With her research colleagues she has received numerous awards for past publications including: The Pinnacles Award from Sigma Theta Tau in 2002 and 2003 (co-authors Marilyn Rantz and Mary Stauffacher); The Society of Teachers for Family Medicine Research Paper in 2003 (David Mehr and Colleagues); and American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award in 1998 and 2001 (Marilyn Rantz and Mary Stauffacher).
