Nursing Specialty: Physiological Nursing with Oncology Nursing specialty

Interest Area: Adult Health Nursing, Oncology Nursing: nutritional deficits, symptom control pain and alternative pain management; NCLEX test construction and analysis

Denice Mendenhall is an instructor of nursing in the Sinclair School of Nursing at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Her present expertise includes the education of nursing students in their second clinical semester about Medical/Surgical nursing care, with a focus on applying problem-solving techniques by using the nursing process and providing corrective nursing treatments. She has also extensively taught beginning nursing students about data collection, health/physical assessment and application of Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory as a critical thinking tool in clinical settings. She is a member of the Oncology Research Interest Group and is currently assisting in Drs. Susan Taylor and Katherine Krenpenning in writing a foundational book about using self-care deficit nursing.

She holds a Master of Nursing degree from the University of Washington in oncology nursing in 1985 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The Ohio State University in 1980. She has worked as a Staff Nurse and an Assistant Head Nurse in medical/surgical nursing, and a Head Nurse and a Clinical Nurse Specialist in oncology nursing before taking her current educator position in 1990.
