Research Description: Nursing Workforce Issues. Nurse database and workforce forecast model development; nurse role clarity and differentiation in practice; impact of shared governance upon creation of a positive work environment.

Nursing Specialty: Family and Gerontologic Nurse Practitioner

Interest Area: Nursing workforce issues focusing on supply and demand of an evolving nursing workforce within a rapidly changing health care environment. Specifically, (1) development of a nursing forecast model addressing supply and demand as dependent upon perceptions and operationalization of nurse role by nurses, their employers and the public and (2) role of shared governance in promoting the professionalization of nursing practice.

Dr. Kuehn has taught extensively at the graduate level, focusing on courses in both family and gerontological nurse practitioner area of study. She served as primary faculty for the GNP area of study for over ten years and maintained a primary care clinical practice focused on care of the older adult. She served as Coordinator for the FNP/GNP Nurse Practitioner areas of study in the graduate nursing program at MU for six years, during which time she testified extensively in support of the expanding role of Missouri's advanced practice nurses. Through initial grant support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Dept. of Education and the Health Resource & Services Administration (HRSA), and current support from the Dept. of Education and from University Hospital, she continues to study the nursing work, specifically in relation to the impact of environment and role clarity upon professionalization of practice. She is also working currently to study the needs of public health and school nurses in relation to utilization of electronic health care resources, with funding from NLM/NIH.

Dr. Kuehn has been a member of the Missouri Dept. of Health Primary Care Advisory Panel since 1994, and continues to be active in legislative and policy activities of the Missouri Nurses Association. Past awards include the "Achievement Award for Special Contribution Toward the Advancement of Professional Nursing" from the 7th District Missouri Nurses Association and "A Tribute to Missouri Nurses" award for "Excellence in the Profession of Nursing: Nurse Education/Research," from St. Louis University.
