Nursing Specialty: Cardiothoriac Nursing

Gretchen's 19 years of clinical experience has been concentrated in the acute health care setting. She spent 8 years in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at the University of Missouri Health Care. Her past nursing experience in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, Perioperative Surgery Services, Angiography, Radiology-Conscious Sedation for Pediatric patients during a MRI, GI lab, and neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and Newborn Nursery areas has enhanced her knowledge base and critical thinking skills. Gretchen has also been an Educator and Liaison to hospital administrations for the Missouri Lions Eye Bank. In addition, she has coordinated Obstetrics clinicals for the Sinclair School of Nursing at the University Hospital.

Gretchen enjoys teaching patients, staff and nursing students. She believes in a very high standard of patient care and believes this standard should be the “norm” for the Sinclair School of Nursing students.

Gretchen received her BSN in 1986 and MS(N) in Nursing Education in 1993 at the University of Missouri-Columbia , School of Nursing.

Gretchen's background is varied but her specialty is cardiothoriac nursing. It is a unique field because the critical path allows a very critical patient to progress to cardiac rehabilitation state within 48 hours. As a nurse, this is very fulfilling because of the intensity and adrenaline in the post operative period and then progressing to the next phase of healing, which involves teaching and rehabilitation.
