Research Description: Interventions to increase exercise among healthy and chronically ill adults across the age span. Medication adherence and management by chronically ill adults. Meta-analytic synthesis of intervention trials to increase exercise or medication adherence.

Nursing Specialty: Adult Nursing, Gerontological Nursing, Health Behavior Change

Interest Area: Exercise, medication, and other health behaviors among older adults

Vicki Conn, PhD, RN, FAAN, is the Associate Dean for Research of the MU Sinclair School of Nursing. Dr. Conn is also the Potter Brinton Professor. Dr. Conn is the Editor of Western Journal of Nursing Research, one of the premier nursing research scientific publications. Conn received her master's (1981) and PhD (1987) degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia and completed postdoctoral study at the University of Iowa. Her area of expertise has been the health behavior of adults, including exercise among men and women. She has been instrumental in testing ways to motivate older adults to exercise and unlocking the key to their motivation. Conn's completed meta-analysis work has provided the synthesis necessary to move intervention research forward with aging adults. Dr. Conn currently is the Principal Investigator on two NIH RO1s: 1) a meta-analysis of interventions to increase physical activity among chronically ill adults and 2) a meta-analysis of primary intervention trials designed to increase exercise among healthy adults across the lifespan. Dr. Conn has served on the NIH nursing science study section reviewing research grant proposals for the last decade.
