Research Description: Stiffness, damping and pain in osteoarthritis of the knee.

Nursing Specialty: Gerontological Nursing, community health, arthritis and health education.

Interest Area: Self-management of chronic illness, stiffness and damping in people with osteoarthritis of the knee, future plans include intervention research to improve stiffness, pain and functional ability in older adults with chronic illness.

Kathryn Burks is an assistant professor at the MU Sinclair School of Nursing. Her dissertation research project was an intervention study that tested a mailed self-management patient education program for people with osteoarthritis of the knee. Presently, her research focuses on stiffness, a key symptom of osteoarthritis. After evaluating the role of stiffness of functional limitation, she will design and test nursing interventions to improve function and decrease disability among older adults.
